From the beginning, Jyothi did not like to stay put in front of a computer; she has always liked to be up and about, keen to socialize and make connections. When at our campus, if you find someone softly humming Bollywood tunes or animatedly discussing different kinds of foods, you can be certain it is none other than Soumya! Having joined Samvada in February 2022, Soumya made a shift from the management field to the development sector after completing her Master’s in Development Studies from Azim Premji University. Prior to this, she completed a Bachelors of Management Studies in Marketing from Delhi University. The restricted worldviews in management and the lack of exposure and understanding of society pushed her to explore new experiences. She started interning at different organisations and realised that people’s circumstances are not individually formed but are systemic and rooted in social structures. Soumya’s energetic resolve and enthusiasm to work with young people stems from the belief that youth should have the space, opportunity and support to exercise their agency in their lives, which can lead to embodying values of social justice and equity in our society. Besides looking for fresh vegetables in local markets, she loves collecting and reading books, musing about extra-terrestrial life while sipping ginger tea, making origami figures, and exploring the city through cultural events.

While he will watch the man play in any form of cricket, he is also reluctantly accepting that his options are fast running out. Rajesh enjoys cooking. He associates the Monsoon season with agriculture and with making time to work in the fields back home- home being Karkala, Karnataka. Being home brings him great joy and he jumps at any opportunity to visit.

Thotegowda
Accountant Cum Cashier
Thotegowda is a man with many feathers in his cap. His humility and his quiet personality keep those feathers hidden. Hailing from Chikkamaglur district of Karnataka, Thotegowda always dreamed of becoming a teacher. The need to provide for his family meant that he had to work while pursuing his studies; it also meant that he was forced to keep his dream aside, in his words, ‘change track’. Nevertheless, Thotegowda completed his B A in an evening college, followed by a B Ed from Bangalore University. It was only here that he got some free time to play sports he loved post-class hours including badminton and volleyball. He then went on to pursue a triple Masters via correspondence- an MA in Economics from Bangalore University, and MAs in History and Kannada- both from Mysore University- passing with flying colours. An achievement that he openly acknowledges he is most proud of in his life, was topping his 6th semester of B Ed. Between 2006 and 2016, Thotegowda worked for different organizations including Standard Chartered Bank (2 years), as a cashier cum assistant accountant at a printing press and also as an operator at a business firm. Thotegowda even signed up for a BCom to get a good hold on accounting but the course was discontinued before he could complete it. In 2016, he joined Samvada as a coordinator of the Early Childcare and Education program at our creche that supported women garment labourers and their children. In 2020, when the creche was discontinued and looking at his meticulous, systematic work with banking, he was offered a role with the accounts department. Thotegowda enjoys watching Kabaddi on TV, reading biographies and psychology books, and taking an interest in his children’s studies. He wishes he had access to career guidance as a young student that would have helped him decide a suitable career path for himself. Karthik N
Administrative Assistant Cum Driver
Karthik is Samvada’s multi-talented driver and admin-assistant. He confidently manoeuvres human, vehicular and animal traffic while ferrying Samvada’s staff from Silk Institute Metro Station to the Samvada campus in time. He is a man of few words who lets his work do the talking. Hailing from Banjarpalya, the neighbourhood of the Samvada campus, Karthik completed his schooling partly from his hometown, Udupi and Bangalore city. He worked in sales as the credit card team lead for ICICI & SBI banks before taking up full-time driving for 2 years. The driving job took him places which helped him make friends from all over Karnataka, and involved long and late-night drives. The former he enjoyed and still cherishes. The latter, not so much. Despite being somewhat of a neighbour, Karthik was unaware of Samvada’s campus being built in the locality. The first time he walked in was for the job interview and he never left. He says his work brings him joy and allows him to learn new accounting and management skills. Karthik loves travelling, as long as he gets to leave the driving to someone else. He would rather sit back playing music. At least once in his life he hopes to visit Paris and ride solo to Ladakh.

Lokesh M
Facilities Team Member
Lokesh hails from Ravagodlu, Hosapalya. He is now settled in Banjarpalya with his family which is nearly a 10-minute walk away from the Samvada campus. He completed his SSLC from Thatguni. After-school hours meant playing volleyball, cricket, carrom with his friends regularly. The love for sports and games continued since, but he isn’t able to make as much time for this like he used to. Before joining Samvada, Lokesh worked at a dyeing factory until it moved to Kengeri and it was hard to travel the distance. He then took up electrical work but the pandemic took that away from him. He then worked on their family farm until an acquaintance put him in touch with Samvada. Lokesh is on campus before most staff arrive and his face is one of the first you’ll see on a work day. As they come in, he greets them with a wave and a smile without fail and asks them if they’ve had tea.

Lakshmamma
Facilities Team Member
Laksmamma came to Bangalore 18 years ago from Mandya. By then, she had 3 small children- two daughters and a son. She worked and made sure that her children studied in a private school and college, a privilege she did not have growing up. She learnt cooking on arriving in Bangalore and can now make special dishes like chicken pepper, kebab and biryani. Lakshmamma joined Samvada in 2018 to look after the kitchen and housekeeping. She does her work with love and considers Samvada as her second family. She is ever ready to lend an empathetic, listening ear towards her colleagues. She plans her commute diligently to conquer the bus ride from home such that she is on time for work. Once she is home, Lakshmamma looks forward to watching TV serials and on weekends makes time to visit her children and grandchildren. You will find her talking less, but letting her work talk.

Maragada
Facilities Team Member
On January 3rd, 2022, when we were preparing for the Campus inaugural, frantically trying to get the place clean and to decorate it before our guests arrived, Maragadamma walked in from the house next door and asked if she could do any work. We were surprised, delighted and desperate! We asked if she could start that very instant and without any hesitation, she said YES! Within a few minutes she was scrubbing, cleaning, doing rangolis, washing the verandas and doing all that needed to be done quietly, diligently and cheerfully! After that there was no looking back. Maragadamma continues to help with cleaning, cutting vegetables, washing dishes and doing a dozen other invisible chores around the campus. Maragadamma is not really sure how old she is, but has clear memories of her childhood in Yanegaldoddi village near Krishnagiri. She also remembers that within one year of sending her to school her parents decided that she needed to help look after the cows and to help with the farm. She spent her childhood in the fields tending to the ragi, paddy and mulberry. When she was almost 18, she was married off to Shankar who was working as a car driver in Bangalore. Maragadamma had to move to Jakkasandra where she began a new life, working in a garment factory to help make ends meet. She missed being on a farm! To her good luck, her brother- in-law found a job for Maragadamma and her husband to look after a small estate. That is how Maragadamma came to Banjarapalya where she began working on the land where Samvada campus is now located. The plot then had lots of mango, lime and coconut trees. Maragadamma began to cultivate ragi and vegetables in a small patch. It has been 26 years since she settled in Banjarapalya – looking after the trees, rearing goats, farming vegetables. Her two children, now in their twenties were born and raised in Banjarapalya. When the estate was sold by the owners, Maragadamma was given a small site and a house to live in and that is how she became our neighbour in 2020- a neighbour who walked over and asked for work in January 2022! Her dream now is to repay the loan she took to build a house and to get her daughter married. For someone who never went to school, who has been to Bangalore only 4 or 5 times, her wisdom and sharp calculations always amaze us.
